Type of Project: Academic - University of Toronto, John H. Daniels School of Architecture

Year: 2023

My Involvement in the Project: Led and executed this project independently from concept through to completion

Embarking on a symbolic exploration, my project surrounded by the word, “To Enlighten,” draws inspiration from Islamic architecture, where light symbolizes the divine, knowledge, and enlightenment. The design features an 8-point star exterior, representing God’s throne, and an inverted 8-point star interior with a towering prayer space oriented towards Mecca.

Multifoil arches and a concealed 8-point star pattern add enticing exploration that can only be viewed from the interior. The exterior includes some areas that are solid and some with the pattern which aim to conceal the activities of the interior while simultaneously activating curiosity within viewers to come into the space and explore. The spatial journey within is more than physical movement; it’s a metaphorical expedition, a quest for personal enlightenment.

The design prompts individuals to navigate through the concealed and revealed spaces, mirroring the internal journey to find light. This space is curated for self-discovery, where every element resonates with the overarching theme – to enlighten. As visitors embark on their journey, the interplay of light, geometry, and spirituality invites them to uncover the hidden brilliance within themselves.
